Displays
Displays or computer monitors are separately packaged, peripheral devices for the computer. It serves to display words, images or other necessary visual data that is essential to the operation of everyday computer processes. Displays are the most common form of output device for desktop computers. Its history is associated with the development of television, which its original use was to provide visual aid for computation and data encoding.
There are three kinds of displays: Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitors, plasma display, and LED TV. You can think of CRT monitors as analog monitors and both LCD monitors, and plasma displays as digital displays. While most CRT monitors have been replaced by LCD screens, some businesses still find use for CRTs. The former operate and display images and words in many rows or lines of tiny colored dots -- the more lines of dots per inch on the screen, the better the resolution. CRT displays along with touch-screen or POS monitors are still commonly used in retail environments due to its inexpensive cost as compared with LCD screens.
On the other hand, the flat screen LCD PC displays have replaced CRT monitors in most computing capabilities. It analyzes and displays data digitally. These are more convenient for everyday use because it is a space saving flat-panel It has become the display of choice for most computer brands because of its digital efficiency, slimmer design and lower energy consumption. The LCD monitor owes its development and inspiration to the CRTs. While LCDs have been replacing CRTs, each type of monitor still finds usage in different fields and industries.
The rapid pace of technological development has ushered in a new kind of display, the plasma displays. Often confused with LCD monitors due to its similarity in physical appearance, plasma displays operate by relying on “plasma cells” that emit brighter and crisper images and colors. While the plasma displays are still in the trend, LED flat-screens entered the market with much acceptance from the consumers. LED TVs are actually LCD TVs using LED to enhance the brightness of the display yet reduces power consumption.
